The PMBOK definition of a Project Lifecycle is the series of stages that a project passes through from its start to its completion. It is important to realise that the project lifecycle may differ depending on the nature and complexity of the project. The stages are varied but all follow the same basic steps. These stages are STARTUP, INITIATE, DELIVER, CLOSE.

Project controls are used across the lifecycle of the project, not just on one stage. They are the processes and documents used to control the project.

Project Controls consist of PLAN, PROCESS, REPORT.

Planning is an essential part of project delivery, without sound planning a project is sure to flounder. There are numerous planning methods and approaches that can be considered. Project StartUp is about determining if the proposed project is a worthwhile investment. The key objective of this stage is to appoint a project manager, determine a suitable approach to the project and create a project brief that explains the rationale for the project, the customer's expectations, and any relevant risks.

A good Project Initiation stage is fundamental to a successful project. By the end of this stage, all interested parties (stakeholders, customers and project team members) will be fully aware of what has to be done, by whom, when, how much it will cost and when the benefits will be realised.
